Creative Solutions Saved Time and Money for Large Diameter Lining Project

8,200
LF CIPP Lining
12
Inch Dual Bypass Pumps
2,900
LF of Bypass Pipeline

A high-priority Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) Inflow and Infiltration Control Program basin underwent an extensive rehabilitation program.

The project encompassed the design services for the rehabilitation of 8,200 LF of significantly deteriorated 24- to 30-inch pipe within IDOT rights-of-way in a heavily commercialized area. The construction phase included a full-time project representative to oversee the lining of 8,200 LF of 8-, 12-, 24-, and 30-inch-diameter sewers. Other services included permitting (IDOT, MWRD); pre- and post-installation CCTV; construction phasing plans; and bypass pumping planning.

Project Metrics

  • Use of trenchless rehabilitation saved the Village approximately $300 per foot over non-trenchless construction methods.
  • Attention to detail when planning alignment, as well as adequate testing of bypass pipe setups, ensured that environmental impacts were eliminated.
  • The innovative approach of using steam to cure the large diameter CIPP saved time and natural resources, as significantly less energy and water were used in the process.
  • Restored major interceptors; adding 50 additional years of service life to the substantially deteriorated pipes.
  • Successful IDOT permit negotiations contributed to the contractor meeting the schedule.
