For public works and utility leaders

Assess your water mains without shutting them down

Advanced Vibroacoustic Analysis (AVA) provides pipe segment condition data while your mains remain pressurized and in service. Prioritize repairs, rehabilitation, and replacement with measured condition data.

Download the AVA brochure to see how pipe segment condition data supports municipal repair and replacement decisions.

The service covers buried water distribution and transmission mains, not building plumbing.

Understand condition beyond age or leak history

Your pipeline’s age and leak history help establish assessment priorities, but they do not show the condition of each pipe segment. Before committing capital to replacement, you need to understand where deterioration is occurring and where pipe remains sound.

RJN’s AVA service uses KenWave’s Dynamic Response Imaging (DRI) to analyze how pipe sections respond to applied sound and vibration frequencies. The assessment provides condition data by pipe segment, with resolution as fine as six feet, rather than a single average for the full pipeline.

Use those findings to distinguish which pipe segments need attention from those that may remain in service. Substantiated condition data helps public works and utility leaders explain investment priorities to elected officials and the public.

How AVA Works

Step 1 | Assess your main in service

RJN captures data using vibration sensors at accessible points along your network. Your main remains pressurized and in service during testing, with no shutdown or bypass system required.

Step 2 | Analyze pipe segment condition

Sensors record the pipe’s response to sound and vibration frequencies. Kenwave’s algorithms analyze those responses to identify variations in condition along the assessed main.

Step 3 | Prioritize your next investment

RJN engineers interpret the findings and present pipe segment condition in clear visuals. Use the results to prioritize further investigation, targeted repairs, rehabilitation, or replacement.

Put condition data to work in capital planning

Your capital improvement program needs evidence to support which assets receive funding first. RJN engineers interpret AVA findings and integrate the condition data into your asset management plans, GIS, and Clarity, RJN’s data management hub.

Pipe segment findings help you evaluate targeted work alongside broader replacement needs. Because testing occurs while the main remains in service, you can gather condition data while maintaining water service to customers.

Discuss your water main assessment priorities

Share the water mains you are evaluating and the decisions your capital program needs to support. RJN can discuss how AVA condition assessment may fit your asset management plan.

  • Non-invasive testing while your main remains pressurized and in service
  • Pipe segment condition data to support targeted repairs, rehabilitation, and replacement
  • Engineering interpretation to turn condition data into assessment priorities
  • Supports capital planning for public works budgets and helps public agencies explain spending priorities
