The City of Irving Water Utilities Department is part of an S.S.O.I (sanitary sewer overflow initiative) program to eliminate overflows. This initiative is actively pursuing the City’s sewer system for areas that have a potential to overflow. The City retained RJN Group, Inc. to perform a Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Study (SSES) in the areas bounded by West Pioneer Dr to the North, Markland St to the South, Senter Rd to the East and South Briary Rd from the West. The scope of services includes flow monitoring and intensive survey activities (manhole inspections, smoke testing, dyed water flooding, and internal television inspection) and data analysis of the Southwest drainage area. A recommended plan to reduce extraneous inflow and infiltration (I/I) and eliminate overflows will be prepared and presented to the City of Irving at the conclusion of the study. At the left is a map of the highlighted boundaries where testing will be performed.
RJN Group, Inc. is conducting field investigations on the sanitary sewer within the Southwest Drainage Basin service area. This study will involve the opening and entering of manholes and inspection of cleanouts and sewer lines in the streets and easements.
An important task of the study will be the SMOKE TESTING of the sewer lines to locate obstructions and defects in the sewer system. The smoke that you see coming from the vent stacks on houses or holes in the ground is NON-TOXIC, LEAVES NO RESIDUE and CREATES NO FIRE HAZARD.

TYPICAL DEFECT IDENTIFICATION
The smoke should not enter your home unless you have defective plumbing or dried up drain traps. Please pour a small amount of water in seldom used drains to fill the trap.

During smoke testing, defects located along the main sewer or near manholes may be identified. These defects will be further tested using a procedure called DYED WATER FLOODING. The area where the defect was observed is "flooded" with green dye. If the dye water appears in the sewer system, then the sewer line is flagged for internal television to determine the exact location and source of the defect. Residents may notice the "green" colored dye on the ground or in the storm ditch during the testing. Please note that this is a harmless substance
